BSG-1u: Next Generation Base Station Access Gateway
Enabling seamless transition to new mobile services
With the BSG-1u (‘Base Station Access Gateway’), Arcadiz Telecom provides mobile operators with a compact and flexible solution that helps reduce recurring costs at the base station and in the radio access network (RAN). The BSG-1u scales with capacity demand, and eases the transition to ATM, IP and Ethernet-based services.

- Maximum backhaul flexibility and investment protection
- Minimum initial cost
- Extensive cell site telemetry capabilities for improved operational efficiency and network visibility.
Design philosophy
Three dynamics require for flexible and extensible access solutions like the BSG-1u:
- New mobile data services require significant transmission network upgrades.
- IP becoming the dominant network protocol.
- Financial pressure on operators to improve operational efficiency.
The BSG-1u is designed to meet mobile operator's requirements for a complete and yet compact solution:
- Enabling flexible capacity and functional expansion proportional to network and subscriber growth.
- Integration of existing 1G/2G/2.5G with 3G transport in a logical, converged and economical migration path.
- Providing a flexible, scalable solution to support an increasing proportion of data traffic in the RAN without sacrificing voice (or data) Quality of Service.
- Providing a comprehensive base station remote management and telemetry solution.
- Enabling rapid payback through savings on cell site equipment and recurring backhaul costs.

Applications
Example 1 – Seamless migration to new network architecture and capacity increase
This example illustrates a base station application supporting collocation of:
- 2G/2.5G GSM/GPRS/EDGE (E1 TDM)
- 3G UMTS (E1 ATM)
- HSDPA (E1 ATM or Ethernet)
- Site telemetry data: power management, fire detection, surveillance, site access control,… (Ethernet, HS serial, RS-232) served by separate access networks.
Integrating the BSG-1u into the network allows phasing of the transition to new services and extended backhaul capacities.
a. Phase 1: New 3G services with existing backhaul network
With low bandwidth demands, traffic is transparently groomed and cross-connected to E1 lines:
- UMTS, HSDPA, Ethernet ? E1 ATM IMA bundle
- GSM, telemetry ? E1 TDM line
b. Phase 2: Backhaul network migration
When bandwidth demands increase, the BSG-1u allows seamless migration to a high-capacity backhaul network:
- Cell/packet ‘fill & groom’ functionality
- Statistical multiplexing of 3G and 2G traffic
- Without any equipment replacement or significant reconfiguration.
All traffic is transparently groomed and cross-connected to the broadband backhaul network:
- UMTS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi ? mapped in Ethernet or STM-1 uplink
- GSM, telemetry ? mapped in Ethernet or STM-1 uplink

Example 2 – Daisy-chaining BSG-1u’s for load optimization
The BSG-1u is extremely suitable for grooming of multiple T1/E1 ATM with low payload. The figure below illustrates how traffic from multiple base stations is groomed in some centrally located sites in order to reduce the use of T1/E1 leased lines to a maximum.
The BSG-1U’s high flexibility allows to add base station telemetry, TDM and ethernet to this configuration.
In this example, the BSG-1u in node 30 is adding the E1 ATM data from Nodes 31 & 32 so that the E1 going to the BSC has a higher occupation (25% instead of 10%). Nodes 10, 20 and 30 are further daisy-chained so that the E1 reaching the BSC has an occupation of 85%, making it much more profitable
