Multi-service access, aggregation and transport
Carrier Access innovative MetroMPLS™ architecture provides the most cost-effective solution for managing network growth and change, while positioning fixed line, mobile and cable MSO providers to dramatically increase their services base.
Carrier Access Piranha™ family of products combines the latest in packet and circuit-switched technology to deliver Ethernet, ATM, TDM Private Line and IP/PPP services seamlessly over any transport infrastructure. Piranha’s unique interworking engine provides a single mechanism for multiple connection types with consistent per-flow traffic management, deep packet inspection, powerful QoS and OA&M and is IP/MPLS ready for future migration.

Carrier Access has created a new, innovative solution for network operators to utilize their existing SONET/SDH, Ethernet or MPLS transport network, thus providing the latest in flexible, intelligent, multi-service access, aggregation and transport.
Applications
Multi-service MPLS & gigabit ethernet
The development of pseudowire technology extends the role of MPLS from the core towards the edge of the network. Also, gigabit ethernet is rapidly becoming the transport technology of choice for many network operators. One of the key challenges is to continue to support ATM- and TDM-based network applications over an Ethernet-based metro core infrastructure.
Carrier Access Piranha™ platforms provide a flexible suite of service interfaces that enable all network services to be transported across a unified MPLS-based network. PWE3 (Pseudowire Emulation Edge-to-Edge) enables differentiated access to a variety of services using the underlying network infrastructures that are in place today.

Piranha platforms provide a layer of unification for provisioning, management and fault-finding that, in combination with OA&M mechanisms, ensures a fully-integrated, standards-based approach to the problem of consolidation at the packet layer within the access network.
Optical pseudowire multiplexing
With the rising deployment of multi-wavelength optical systems in the metro, there is an increasing need to extend high bandwidth service to the access network. Carrirer Access’ Piranha™ platforms support a variety of Intelligent Packet Transport applications that combine packet intelligence with next generation SDH technologies including VCAT, GFP and optical protection. Piranha becomes, in effect, the packet MSPP, efficiently packing wavelengths with services.

POS/MPLS multiplexing
Packet-over-SONET/SDH (POS) interfaces on routers are typically limited to the fixed bandwidths of the SDH. Mangrove's Piranha™ platform solves this problem by combining Packet over SONET/SDH technologies with powerful QoS and VCAT in a single platform, enabling intermediate bandwidths. In this application the Piranha acts as a packet multiplexer to efficiently map one or more POS traffic streams into a VCAT stream.

ATM aggregation
ATM continues to be an important service in many networks. However, it is inefficient to use precious slot resources on ATM or MPLS switches to aggregate low-speed interfaces. The Piranha 600 is an extremely cost-effective and future-proof aggregator for ATM IMA and ATM clear channel traffic streams, while the Piranha 100 operates as a compact ATM switch with similar capabilities for lower-capacity applications.

SDH link aggregation
The Piranha platforms extended Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) capabilities allow a VCAT group to operate across multiple interface ports. This allows the ports to be bundled, thus creating a larger “virtual port” from a number of lower speed services. For example, a group of seven individual STM-1’s or two STM-4’s can be combined to provide sufficient bandwidth for transport of a full Gigabit of Ethernet traffic.
