Cost-effective combined CWDM/SDH solutions

The transport backbone represents today 10-20% of the total mobile network cost. Unless new transport solutions are introduced, this part is likely to get more expensive for carriers as new services in parallel need to be supported over the physical infrastructure in present and future mobile networks.

The present solution for transport backbone is based on traditional SDH/SONET systems. As only a portion of the full functionality in a SDH/SONET system is required for mobile transport this represents an expensive and space consuming choice for the carrier.

The mobile transport backbone is with the introduction of 3G and multimedia services facing a new set of demands that need to be handled cost efficiently and in a way that supports the growing core functionality of the network. The choice of transport solution becomes a strategic question for both suppliers and carriers in order to support the evolution of the network.
