Arcadiz Telecom provides last mile connectivity for Flemish Supercomputing Centre
01/03/2010
When in 2007 a study on e-research in Flanders (Belgium) identified, among other things, the need for more support and infrastructure for grid and high-performance computing, the government established the Flemish Supercomputer Centre (VSC, see insert below). The VSC project brings together the five Flemish university associations to align and integrate their existing supercomputer infrastructure, to make their expertise available to the public and private funded research and to develop a competitive grid and HPC infrastructure available to all researchers in Flanders by 2010. The Flemish universities have been tuning their efforts since then to build a grid of super computers clustering the existing super computers on different locations and providing connectivity for the new supercomputer planned for 2010.

Brutele selects Transmode and Arcadiz

Transmode, the Optical Pioneer, and channel partner Arcadiz, today announced that Brutélé, the Belgian Cable TV operator, has successfully deployed the Transmode TS-Series C/DWDM metro networking platform to support its Triple Play services infrastructure.

The new Brutélé WDM network comprises of a network connecting Brutélé’s primary regions of Brussels and Charleroi, as well as its peer network in Liège and a metro network for the Brussels region. The network is built using Transmode’s TS-Series C/DWDM platform and initially the network is used to transport Broadcast Video traffic.

Brutélé provide the full range of Triple Play services to residential customers within the Brussels area and French speaking region of Belgium and is currently undergoing a period of rapid expansion. In addition to residential services, Brutélé provides services to both small and large enterprise customers such as high-speed broadband, Ethernet Private Lines, Gigabit Ethernet and VPN services.

“With the Transmode TS-Series Brutélé acquires the ideal platform for both its residential broadband infrastructure and its high capacity services to large enterprises,” said Jean-Michel Adant, Brutélé’s Chief Executive Officer. “We undertook a rigorous selection procedure and selected Transmode and Arcadiz for the outstanding quality and price/performance ratio of the platform and the local support services.”

The TS-Series deployment provides Brutélé with a flexible and scalable platform supporting multi-protocol 2.5G and 10G Transponders and Hi-Speed and Low-Speed Muxponder units. Initially supporting low-cost CWDM wavelengths, the system has the scalability to extend to additional CWDM and DWDM wavelengths in service. Using patented Intelligent WDM (iWDM) protocol recognition and functionality such as SFP/XFP pluggable optics, the TS-Series provides network operators and enterprises with a true plug-and-play experience, greatly reducing network and service turn up times, cost and complexity.

“In addition to local 24/7 multi-lingual support services, Arcadiz were able to provide Brutélé with additional integration and laboratory testing capabilities,” said Jos Vermeylen, Arcadiz’s Managing Director. “A key element was the network management integration where our engineers worked closely with the Brutélé engineers to ensure a swift introduction of the new platform into the network.”

“We are delighted to be jointly announcing this important customer win with Arcadiz today,” said Björn Andersson, Transmode’s Vice President of Sales. “Cable TV operators, such as Brutélé, have a broad range of service and capacity requirements, especially as they expand into business services. Transmode and our local and highly experienced partners such as Arcadiz are ideally positioned to support these needs in the most economic manner.”
