Arcadiz Telecom provides last mile connectivity for Flemish Supercomputing Centre
01/03/2010
When in 2007 a study on e-research in Flanders (Belgium) identified, among other things, the need for more support and infrastructure for grid and high-performance computing, the government established the Flemish Supercomputer Centre (VSC, see insert below). The VSC project brings together the five Flemish university associations to align and integrate their existing supercomputer infrastructure, to make their expertise available to the public and private funded research and to develop a competitive grid and HPC infrastructure available to all researchers in Flanders by 2010. The Flemish universities have been tuning their efforts since then to build a grid of super computers clustering the existing super computers on different locations and providing connectivity for the new supercomputer planned for 2010.

Values

Competence is often defined as the ability to perform the activities within an occupation or function to the standards expected. This includes not only the ability to acquire and transfer skills and knowledge, to organise and plan work, but also personal effectiveness... to deal with co-workers, managers and customers in new, challenging environments. Vendors, suppliers, partners and Arcadiz staff always act as a team, striving for the best possible solution for our customer.

Rather than try to define one notion of quality, there are discrete but interrelated ways of thinking about quality:

  • Quality as perfection sees quality as a consistent or flawless outcome;
  • Quality as fitness for purpose sees quality in terms of fulfilling a customer’s requirements, needs or desires; and,
  • Quality as value for money sees quality in terms of return on investment. If the same outcome can be achieved at a lower cost, or a better outcome can be achieved at the same cost, then the ‘customer’ has a quality product or service.

For Arcadiz Telecom staff quality is not a question of either or. We always take all three dimensions into account.

Knowledge is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as (i) expertise, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject, (ii) what is known in a particular field or in total; facts and information or (iii) awareness or familiarity gained by experience of a fact or situation. In our rapidly changing industry, we, at Arcadiz, are committed to stay abreast of , new technologies and business models.

It is this combination of knowledge, competence and quality that allows Arcadiz Telecom staff to create value, to build critical capabilities and to come with made to measure, state-of-the-art solutions that create true business value for our customers.
